Contemporary Fairytales

There’s a saying I hear a lot in my line of work.  “There are no new stories, only new ways of telling them.”  I was just thinking how this is true of A Vintage Heart in Hollywood.  Basically, it’s a contemporary telling of the fairytale, A Sleeping Beautyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeping_Beauty

I often compare to the movie, 50 First Dates, but that movie is a Sleeping Beauty also.  The heroine is incapable of reciprocating the hero’s affections.  He must wake her up first.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_First_Dates

The *sleep* is different things in the different stories, but it’s the same thing.  The hero must wake up the heroine before she can love him back.  The theme, therefore, is ‘Love is Patient.’

That brings me back to another bit of advice I hear a lot.  If you want to be a writer, you need to READ.  Read a lot, know your mythology, your fairytales, and all that, learn to find the great stories in the movies, television, history, and the faces of strangers.
